Projected Mets 2009 Roster: Heading Into Spring Training

I've updated the projected Mets roster about once a month this offseason, so here is where it stands right before spring training begins. Remember this is what I think the Mets 2009 roster will look like - not what I want it to look like.

Rotation (5)
1 - Johan Santana
2 - Mike Pelfrey
3 - John Maine
4 - Oliver Perez
5 - Tim Redding/Freddy Garcia

Bullpen (7)
CL - Francisco Rodriguez
J.J. Putz
Pedro Feliciano
Brian Stokes
Sean Green
Duaner Sanchez
Tim Redding/Freddy Garcia

Starting Lineup (8)
Jose Reyes, SS
Carlos Beltran, CF
David Wright, 3B
Carlos Delgado, 1B
Fernando Tatis, LF
Ryan Church, RF
Brian Schneider, C
Luis Castillo, 2B

Bench (5)
Daniel Murphy, OF/2B
Jeremy Reed/Cory Sullivan, OF
Ramon Castro, C
Marlon Anderson, OF/1B/worthless
Alex Cora, 2B/SS

I actually laughed out loud at that "worthless" note next to Anderson.

Well done.

Agreed. Nick Evans, for one, would be much better use of that roster spot. But maybe hes better off playing regularly in AAA?
I think they'll pick up a RH hitter before opening day, and hoepfully that will mean no Marlon.

I see Freddy Garcia as a #6 emergency starter and nothing more. Garcia will not start in the rotation or in the bullpen.

Tim Redding is #5.

K-Rod, Putz, Sanchez, Green, and Feliciano will be five members of the bullpen; Brian Stokes is the longman in the bullpen; and there is time to figure out who will be #7 in the pen.

Like the rest of the Met bats, the bench is too left handed. Marlon Anderson will probably be cut or traded and replaced by somebody right handed.

I'd love to see the Mets cut Marlon Anderson loose. For some reason I don't see it happening.

The problem I have with putting Nick Evans on the Opening Day roster is he would be little more than a pinch hitter. I'd rather keep him in AAA where he can play everyday (like you said Mitch) and continue to develop, rather than giving him 1 start every week and a half with the big club. He's only 23 years old. Why bury him on the bench when there's a chance he could be the starter at 1B in 2010? Of course, an injury to Church or Tatis would change my stance on Evans.

As for Redding/Garcia - personally I'd prefer Redding in the #5 spot, with Garcia in AAA. I'd like to see the Mets sign Will Ohman or Joe Beimel to round out the bullpen. But I don't see that happening either, and I'd rather have Garcia in the 'pen than some throwaway guy like Casey Fossum, Tom Martin or Valerio de los Santos.

All of you guys seemingly do not know much about baseball. How can you call Marlon Anderson worthless??? How many times has he bailed us out with clutch pinch hits? All your other comments are agreeable.

Where did Robinson Cancel and Luis Ayala wind up?

Luis Ayala was a free agent and signed with the Twins. Robinson Cancel is on the Mets 40-man roster and should spend some time with the Mets this season when Ramon Castro inevitably gets hurt.
