Projected Mets 2009 Roster

I've updated my projected Mets roster about once a month this offseason, so here is where it stands on January 1st. Remember this is what I think the Mets 2009 roster will look like - not what I want it to look like.

1 - Johan Santana
2 - Oliver Perez
3 - Mike Pelfrey
4 - John Maine
5 - Tim Redding/Freddy Garcia

Bullpen (7)
CL - Francisco Rodriguez
J.J. Putz
Pedro Feliciano
Brian Stokes
Sean Green
Duaner Sanchez
Tim Redding/Freddy Garcia

Starting Lineup (8)

Carlos Beltran, CF
David Wright, 3B
Carlos Delgado, 1B
Bobby Abreu, LF
Ryan Church, RF
Brian Schneider, C
Luis Castillo, 2B

Bench (5)
Daniel Murphy, OF/2B
Jeremy Reed, OF
Ramon Castro, C

Keep in mind the payroll figure includes $$ owed Billy Wagner, Marlon Anderson and Scott Schoeneweis. Payroll in 2008 was around $140 million.

I know there's a lot of "The Mets are not the Yankees" sentiment going around concerning free agent signings but why don't the Mets just eat Castillo's contract and sign Orlando Hudson? It just makes sense to me.

Hudson would be Castillo Part 2. Met fans have this weird lovefest about Hudson and he's not as good as people think. They see the Gold Gloves and assume great fielder - well he hasn't posted a positive UZR since 2005. His D is overrated.

They see the 2008 OPS+ of 108 but don't see how much playing at Chase Field in Arizona helped him:
Home: .326/.403/.536
Road: .288/.337/.381

That's a 200+ point differential in OPS. What will happen when he plays half his games at pitcher's park Citi Field? Let's get real, I hate Castillo as much as the next Met fan - but the solution is not eating his contract and giving 31 year-old Hudson (who's had 2 seasons in a row end in injury) $40+ million.

Spend the $$ on Lowe or even Manny before Hudson.
