Javier Vazquez traded to the Braves

The object of my offseason affection, Javier Vazquez, has been traded to the Braves. He will reportedly be headed to Atlanta along with lefty relief pitcher Boone Logan. It has not been confirmed which players Atlanta is sending to the White Sox, but possibilities include shortstop Brent Lillibridge, pitcher Jo-Jo Reyes and catcher Tyler Flowers. If the Braves give up Lillibridge and Reyes for Vazquez I'm going to scream - they will receive a much better deal than the White Sox. I'll hold off commenting on the trade until terms are finalized.

Scratch Vazquez off my list of potential starters for the last 2 spots in the Mets rotation. Available pitchers who I'd like to see fill the spots are:

- Derek Lowe
- Randy Wolf
- Ben Sheets
- Andy Sonnanstine
- Nate Robertson
- Odalis Perez
....and....
- Randy Johnson

What's your case for Randy Johnson....or is that a joke?

Definitely not a joke. Johnson is still a capable pitcher, and will be motivated to pitch well since he's 5 wins short of the 300-win milestone. Even at age 44 this season, he put up a 3.76 FIP (15th in league), 3.91 ERA, 8.46 K/9 (6th in league) and 3.93 K/BB (3rd in league).

Yeah, he sucked (relatively speaking) in NY with the Yankees, and he has injury concerns. But the Mets could do a lot worse than signing him for 1 year and like $9 million. I think I'm gonna make a post about him. P.S. It's unlikely he'd return to NY.

So I started writing a post about Randy Johnson, and I checked Neyer's page. He wrote a post about Johnson already. He wrote pretty much everything I was gonna write.

I think Randy would be a good signing for every team and would probably come cheaper than he's really worth. The chances of the Mets getting him are pretty slim though.

I would just be worried about him getting injured after 4 starts*.

* number completely arbitrary.

Agreed, he is an injury concern.

But so are Ben Sheets, Randy Wolf, John Maine, Oliver Perez, Johan Santana (coming off knee surgery), and A.J. Burnett.

Remember when Randy like got in a fight with some cameraman right after he got traded to the Yankees? Most of the time I forget that he even played for the Yankees. It's wiped from my memory or something, Men in Black style.

Actually according to the stats Randy Johnson was better for the Yankees than I remember, especially in his first year. People will like to bring up that he "won" 17 games both years but in his first year he posted an ERA of 3.79 an ERA+ of 4.23 and a WHIP of 1.126 He also through over 225 innings (wow)He never reached that 30 win season that John Kruk predicted but he did make all 34 starts.

In his second year with the yanks though he posted a bloated 5.00 ERA and a WHIP of 1.239

Also for what it's worth, except for players named C.C. and Mark I'd rather have Sheets over any other available Free Agent, especially overrated AJ Burnett.

Oh absolutely. I don't understand the love of Burnett. He's made 30+ starts just twice (both in contract years.... hmmm). He'll be on the DL in no time. I'm reading teams are gonna give him like 5 years, $80-90 million? Is this a joke?

I'd be thrilled if the Mets got Sheets for like 2 years, $30 million or even a 3 year deal. He's got injury issues, but not nearly as worrisome as Burnett.
